Project Overview

Located at the critical northeast corner of Jinji Lake in the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), this project seeks to bridge the gap between Suzhou's rich 2,500-year historical identity and its modern urban evolution. The design thesis, "Impression of Suzhou," transforms a generic modern waterfront into a culturally resonant and multi-functional public realm that serves visitors, consumers, and local residents.

Jinji Lake Waterfront Design Process

Cultural & Conceptual Framework

The design is rooted in extensive cultural analysis, which identified a strong public affinity for Suzhou's quintessential elements: Water Lanes (95% favorability), Classical Gardens, Kunqu Opera, Silk, and Taihu Stone. To integrate these historical foundations with modern vitality, the project proposes a conceptual 'Internal River'. This thematic artery runs parallel to the main lake edge, acting as a narrative pathway that strings together cultural nodes and connects the historic 'City Axis' directly to the Jinji Lake waterfront.

Design Strategy & Structure

The master plan is organised into three distinct functional zones, responding to adjacent land uses and user demographics:

Implementation & Key Nodes

The strategy is realised through a series of 'Theme Entrances' along the street boundary—such as the Taihu Lake Stone, Kunqu Opera, and Suzhou Embroidery entrances—which draw people into the site. The waterfront edge itself is defined by diverse typologies, moving gradually from hardscape terraces in the north to soft, ecological banks in the south. The result is a cohesive, integrated design that celebrates local culture while providing high-quality, accessible public space.
